A cornerstone of modern bullion history, the South African Krugerrand was first minted on July 3, 1967, by the Rand Refinery and South African Mint to market the nation's rich gold reserves. The coin's name blends its historical roots, combining the portrait of Paul Kruger—former President of the South African Republic featured on the obverse—with the "rand," South Africa’s national currency. The reverse showcases the iconic pronking springbok, the national animal. By 1980, the Krugerrand dominated over 90% of the global gold coin market, though international import bans during the 1980s and 1990s sharply curtailed its reach due to ties with the apartheid regime. Uniquely, the Krugerrand carries no nominal face value; instead, it derives its official legal tender status purely from its gold content (implicitly "one ounce of fine gold"), a rare feature shared historically with the British sovereign. Celebrating its legacy, the mint introduced a silver bullion version in 2017 to mark its 50th anniversary, carrying this classic design into a new era.

Krugerrand gold coin guide: History, value, and why collectors want it

The Krugerrand has been sold since 1967, survived a decade-long US import ban tied to apartheid-era sanctions, and still trades close to the gold price for most examples. This guide covers its design, its fractional and platinum versions, and the rare patterns, proofs and provenance pieces, such as a coin recovered near Ground Zero, that collectors pay well above bullion value to own.
