Top 10 most expensive whiskies ever sold

The most expensive whiskies ever sold at auction share one trait: a supply too small for demand to catch up. Six of the ten records here trace to a single Macallan cask filled in 1926, and the other four are Japanese, led by Yamazaki and Karuizawa.

Most whisky changes hands for the price of a meal out. What separates these ten bottles is paperwork rather than age alone: a cask number, a bottling date confirmed decades later, and sometimes a label commissioned from a named artist rather than printed by the thousand.

The auction record for a single bottle of whisky has changed hands five times since 2018. The current holder, set at Sotheby’s in November 2023, is worth nearly three times what took the title five years earlier. Here are the ten highest confirmed prices.

Top 10 most expensive whiskies ever sold

1. The Macallan Valerio Adami 60 Year Old 1926 (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: £2,187,500)

Sold at Sotheby’s London on 18 November 2023, this bottle is number 12 of 12 carrying a label by Italian artist Valerio Adami, one of two artists Macallan commissioned in 1986 to decorate bottles from its oldest cask. The £2,187,500 hammer price, nearly twice the £1.2 million estimate, came from the Legendary Collection of Pierre Chen and remains the highest paid for a bottle of whisky.

2. The Macallan Fine & Rare 60 Year Old 1926 (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: £1,452,000)

Drawn from the same cask 263 but carrying Macallan’s plainer Fine & Rare label, this bottle sold at Sotheby’s London on 24 October 2019, headline lot of the Ultimate Whisky Collection. It made £1,452,000 against a £350,000 to £450,000 estimate, a record for any bottle of wine or spirit until the Adami bottle overtook it four years later.

3. The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60 Year Old, Bonhams Edinburgh (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: £848,750)

A second Adami-labelled bottle from the same run sold at Bonhams in Edinburgh on 3 October 2018, then the most valuable standard-sized bottle of whisky sold at auction. The vendor had bought it directly from Macallan in 1994. Of the twelve Adami bottles made, one was destroyed in Japan’s 2011 earthquake.

Seven months before the Edinburgh sale, a third Adami bottle sold at Bonhams’ Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky auction in Hong Kong on 18 May 2018 for HK$8,636,250, more than double its top estimate, one of two Macallan 1926 records set that day.

Bottled for Club Natsume in Nagoya to mark the club’s 50th anniversary and signed by Suntory’s chief blender Shinji Fukuyo, this bottle sold at Bonhams Hong Kong on 30 May 2026 for HK$8,250,000, close to US$1,050,000, nearly double its high estimate and a new record for Japanese whisky.

6. The Macallan Red Collection (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: £756,400 for the set of six)

Unlike the rest of this list, the Red Collection is six bottles, aged 40 to 78 years, the oldest age-statement whisky sold at auction. Sotheby’s sold one of only two such sets in London on 31 October 2020 for £756,400, above its £200,000 low estimate.

Macallan commissioned two artists in 1986: Adami and Sir Peter Blake, who co-created the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. One of only twelve Blake-labelled bottles made, it sold by phone bid at the same Bonhams Hong Kong sale as the Adami bottle above, for HK$7,962,500.

A second Blake-labelled bottle from the same run sold at Bonhams in Edinburgh on 6 March 2019 for £615,063, above its £500,000 to £700,000 estimate, one of a run of Macallan 1926 sales across 2018 and 2019 that made six-figure whisky prices routine.

9. Yamazaki 55 Year Old (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: approx. £607,300)

Distilled in the 1960s and matured in Japanese Mizunara oak, this was one of only 100 bottles released by Suntory in June 2020 through a lottery open only to Japanese residents. It sold at Bonhams Hong Kong on 21 August 2020 for HK$6,200,000.

10. Karuizawa 52 Year Old, Zodiac Rat, Cask 5627, 1960 (VERIFIED AUCTION RECORD: £363,000)

Karuizawa closed in 2000, and each of the 41 bottles from cask 5627 carries a numbered netsuke carved from its own oak. Sotheby’s sold this bottle, the oldest Karuizawa ever released, in London on 19 March 2020 for £363,000, past its £160,000 to £220,000 estimate.

Why a single 1986 bottling run still leads the market

Six of the ten prices here trace to one event: the 1986 bottling of Macallan’s cask 263, which yielded 40 bottles, only 24 with an artist’s label. That scarcity has outlasted every sale. Each time an Adami or Blake bottle has reappeared, from Hong Kong in 2018 to London in 2023, it has made more than the one before it.

The other four entries mark a newer shift. Two Yamazaki editions and a Karuizawa cask now sit in the same band as Macallan’s rarest bottles, new territory for Japanese whisky before 2018. With Karuizawa’s stock fixed since 2000, the same scarcity looks set to push Japanese whisky prices up too.
