American artists past and present star at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers

Works by major American artists past and present will lead a series of upcoming sales at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago.
Later this month the company will host sales of Post War and Contemporary Art, Fine Prints and American and European Art, with a particular focus on American artists across all three auctions.

Leading the American and European Art sale is ‘Smith Silo’ by the American abstract painter and lithographer Ralston Crawford. Inspired by the agricultural surrounding of Chadds Ford and Exton, Pennsylvania, where he worked from 1934 to 1939, the Precisionist painting comes with an estimate of $300-000-$500,000.

Further notable works will include George Inness’ 19th century landscape ‘Sunset’, estimated at $100,000-$150,000; Marc Chagall’s work on paper ‘L’arche portee par David a Jerusalem’, valued at $60,000-$80,000; and Birger Sandzen’s 1950 work ‘Pacific Coastline’, estimated at $50,000-$70,000.

The Post War and Contemporary Art sale will be led by ‘Play’, a colourful, dreamlike work by Will Barnet estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Elsewhere, standout lots will include ‘Satchmo’, a portrait of the Jazz legend Louis Armstrong by the celebrated American painter LeRoy Neiman estimated at $50,000-$70,000; ‘Whales’ by Terry Rodgers, priced at $30,000-$50,000; 

Topping the Fine Prints auction is a self-portrait by the renowned American photorealist Chuck Close, produced in 2000 in an edition of 80, estimated at $80,000-$120,000.

The strong selection will also include ‘Faune et marin’ by Pablo Picasso, executed circa 1956 and valued at $30,000-$40,000; ‘My Marilyn’ by British Pop artist Richard Hamilton, published in 1966 and estimated at $30,000-$50,000; The Sower by Roy Lichtenstein, from his 1985 Landscape Series, estimated at $30,000 to $50,000; and Man Posing by Lucian Freud, created in 1985 and estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The sales of Post War & Contemporary Art and Fine Prints take place on May 24, followed by the American and European Art sale on May 25.
