Donald Healey’s motoring memorabilia to sell at Bonhams Goodwood sale

Personal memorabilia from the collection of British motoring pioneer Donald Healey will be sold at Bonham’s next month, during the Goodwood Revival Sale.
Healey was a legendary racing driver who broke speed records, and an automotive designer who founded the Donald Healey Motor Company.

The Bonhams auction will offer an array of personal items and motoring memorabilia belonging to Donald and his son Geoffrey, who worked alongside his father as a development engineer for more than 30 years.

"The Healey archive represents an insight in to the life and times of father and son, Donald and Geoffrey Healey and illustrates their seemingly endless motoring talents," said Toby Wilson, Head of the Automobilia Department.

"This collection has been a pleasure to research, and it is a privilege for Bonhams to be offering it for sale."

The collection features more than 70 lots, such as signed books and diaries, unseen concept car artwork, a scratch-built model, trophies and an archive of notes from races, test drives and record breaking time trials.

Notable highlights will include a scratch-built scale model of an Austin-Healey 100, presented to Geoffrey’s widow Margot (est. £2,000-£3,000); Donald Healey’s Dunlop overalls, worn at race events at Sebring during the 1950s and 1960s; and the 1951 Mille Miglia ‘Franco Mazzotti’ Silver Trophy awarded to Geoffrey, who took part in the race with his father in a Nash-Healey 3850cc Spider (est. £2,000-£3,000)

"It has been an immense responsibility looking after my father’s collection over the 20 years since his death," said Kate, daughter of Geoffrey and grand-daughter of Donald.

"It was especially precious to him – he kept everything! Racing certificates, bunches of keys, paintings, trophies and car designs all formed part of the collection. Anything that was part of the Healey story was safely stowed away.

"It is an eclectic mix spanning many years, and each item has its own story. We feel that these treasured items deserve to find homes all over the world with admirers of Healey cars and their history."

The Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale takes place on September 9.
