If you’re a Planet of the Apes fan, here’s your chance to own a piece of movie history: the original poster artwork for Battle for the Planet of the Apes.
The painting is expected to sell for up to $8,000 when it hits the block at Heritage Auctions.

But there’s no time to monkey around, as the sale takes place in Dallas this weekend, on July 29-30.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes, released in 1973, was the fifth and final instalment of the original ‘Apes’ series.

It told the story of the final conflict between primates, led by ape leader Caesar, and a group of radiation-scarred mutant humans, who eventually form an uneasy truce after a global nuclear war.

The poster was the work of Robert Tanenbaum, a renowned illustrator who produced posters for famous films throughout the 1970s and 80s, including A Christmas Story, Assault on Precinct 13, Cujo, The Great Escape and The Colour of Money.

The Heritage movie poster sale also includes another piece of original poster art, for one of the greatest disaster movie of all time – The Towering Inferno.

The 1974 film features an all-star cast, including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire,William Holden, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Wagner and even O.J. Simpson – all of whom are pictured in the illustration by Tom Jung.

The poster was created for the film’s 1976 reissue, and the artwork also comes with an estimate of $4,000 – $8,000.

Although still relatively undervalued in comparison to original artwork from comic books, movie poster artwork is certainly a growing area for collectors.

Recent major sales have included Robert Gleason’s iconic image for the original Halloween poster, which sold for $83,650; Mike Bryan’s artwork for RoboCop, one of the most famous movie posters of the 1980s, which sold for $47,800; and the Cannonball Run II artwork by legendary poster artist Drew Struzan, which sold for $21,510.
