The 10 most valuable American football trading cards

American football trading cards have climbed from cardboard novelty to genuine financial asset over the past three decades, a rise that began with the sport’s first true set in 1935 and has accelerated sharply since manufacturers started stitching game-worn patches and on-card autographs into rookie cards in the late 1990s.

Topps and Panini printed these sets in their millions and sold them for a few cents a pack from newsstands, drugstores and hobby shops, not kept behind glass. PSA alone has graded more than 5,000 examples of Jim Brown’s 1958 Topps rookie card, and only six have ever come back Mint. That gap, between how many were made and how many survive in top condition, or in the case of the newest cards, how few were ever signed against a printed serial number, is what separates a card worth a few dollars from one that changes hands for six or seven figures.

The ten results below span ninety years of the hobby, from a 1935 gum-card set that predates television to a 2025 redemption card for a jersey patch not yet produced when it sold.

1. Tom Brady, 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket (£2.2 million)

This 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket rookie autograph is one of only 100 Brady signed for the set, and Beckett has graded just seven of those BGS 9, with none higher. Fanatics Collect, trading at the time as PWCC Marketplace, sold it in its October 2022 Premier Auction after 41 bids.

2. Justin Herbert Signed NFL Shield Rookie Card – BGS NM-MT+ 8.5, Beckett 10 (£1,332,741.60)

Sold in 2022, this one-of-a-kind “1/1” 2020 National Treasures Justin Herbert Rookie Card Autograph NFL Shield is a highly coveted investment piece rarely seen in public auctions. Graded BGS 8.5 (NM-MT+) with a perfect Beckett “10” blue-ink signature, the card features a stunning multicolored authentic memorabilia patch. Fueled by Herbert’s record-setting early success as a premier NFL quarterback, this elusive rookie card holds massive market potential, drawing comparisons to similar multi-million dollar NFL Shield cards and serving as a premier target for high-end collectors.

3. Josh Allen, 2025 Topps Chrome Honors Gold NFL Shield Patch Auto (£1.0 million)

Panini fitted Buffalo’s 2024 NFL MVP with a gold NFL Shield patch on his 2025 game-worn jerseys, an honour given to only five players that season, and produced just four Gold Shield cards from it: three standard versions and this single autographed one. It sold as a redemption, meaning the buyer paid before the physical card existed, at Fanatics Collect’s May 2026 Premier Auction, the first million-dollar football card sale in three years.

4. Barry Sanders, 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green (£276,590)

Fleer’s 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems parallel ran 150 copies of each player on its 198-card checklist, splitting them into the first 15 off the press in emerald green foil and the remaining 135 in ruby red. PSA has graded only two examples of Sanders’ Green parallel, and neither ranks above this PSA 8. Fanatics Collect sold it in August 2025.

5. Jim Brown, 1958 Topps rookie card (£219,502)

PSA and SGC between them have examined 5,297 copies of Brown’s 1958 Topps rookie card, and only six have ever come back graded Mint. This PSA NM-MT+ 8.5, one grade below that summit, carried a reserve of £19,054 when Robert Edward Auctions catalogued it for its spring 2022 sale, and it sold for many times that.

6. Peyton Manning, 1998 Skybox E-X2001 Essential Credentials Future (£130,754)

1998 Skybox E-X2001 numbered its Essential Credentials Future parallel in reverse order of a player’s position on the checklist. Manning sat at #54 of 60, which limited his print run to just seven cards. Fanatics Collect sold this PSA 9, the highest grade PSA has recorded for the card, in October 2025.

7. Bronko Nagurski, 1935 National Chicle rookie card (£83,877)

Nagurski’s card from the 1935 National Chicle set is widely regarded as the key card of the entire pre-war football era. Robert Edward Auctions catalogued this copy, graded SGC NM/MT 8 and the only example ever to reach that grade, in its spring 2025 sale.

8. Walter Payton, 1976 Topps rookie card (£51,227)

Payton’s 1976 Topps rookie card rarely surfaces in Gem Mint condition. It was the leading football lot in a Robert Edward Auctions sale that also cleared ten baseball and non-sport items above £80,000, headlined by a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle at £273,208.

9. Patrick Mahomes, 2017 National Treasures Rookie Patch Autograph Green (£43,279)

This Green Jersey Number parallel, numbered 3 of 15 and carrying a Gem Mint 10 autograph grade over a Mint 9 card grade, opened for bids at £20,037 at Robert Edward Auctions’ spring 2024 sale before selling for more than double that.

10. Joe Montana, 1981 Topps rookie card (£34,782)

Montana’s 1981 Topps rookie card is one of the hobby’s modern classics, and Gem Mint 10 examples are scarce. Robert Edward Auctions opened bidding at £7,628 for this one in its summer 2023 sale; it sold for more than four times that.

An extra interesting card to know about

Joe Namath, 1965 Topps “Butterfly” rookie card (£14,069)

This 1965 Topps rookie carries the black “butterfly” print mark on Namath’s throwing hand that set collectors chase as a distinct variation, and PSA ranks it in the top 14 per cent of all examples it has graded. Huggins & Scott, the Maryland auction house Robert Edward Auctions acquired in 2023, sold it in its summer 2024 auction.

Manufactured scarcity meets ninety years of attrition

Seven of the ten cards here were produced from 2017 onwards, and four are built around a single game-used patch and a single signature: their scarcity was decided at the printing plant, on a card numbered 1 of 1 or 1 of 15, not by decades of packs thrown away or lost. Nagurski, Brown, Montana and Namath belong to an older economy, where what matters is how many examples a grading company has seen in 45 or 90 years, not how many the manufacturer chose to make.

Between those two markets sits Manning’s Essential Credentials Future parallel, a 1990s insert the manufacturer numbered down to seven copies, which already fetches a sum closer to the vintage rookies than to the newest patch autographs. As Panini and Topps keep shrinking print runs on their flagship rookies, that middle ground looks likely to keep growing.
