1933 double eagle coin values explained: the story behind America’s most iconic gold coin
The 1933 double eagle is an exceptionally rare United States $20 gold coin, with only 13 known specimens surviving today. Originally, the United States Mint produced 445,500 of these coins during the Great Depression; however, none were officially released to the public, and the government ordered the vast majority to be melted down. A handful of coins were stolen from the Mint before their destruction and eventually made their way into private collections. Currently, only one 1933 double eagle is legally permitted to be privately owned. Known as the Weitzman Specimen, this unique piece solidified its status as the most expensive coin ever sold when it was auctioned for $18.9 million in 2021.
