Heritage Auctions’ print sale offers blue-chip artists at affordable prices


Heritage Auctions is set to host its first dedicated sale of Modern & Contemporary Prints, which aims to offer blue-chip names at affordable prices.
The auction will features works by the likes of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg

"The auction represents the most important and creative printmakers today, and a great opportunity for all collecting levels," said Frank Hettig, Director of Modern & Contemporary Art for Heritage Auctions.

"With estimates ranging from $600+ to $100,000+ the auction offers the finest work at price levels seasoned and emerging collectors alike will respond to. There are great names and great buys to be had all across this grouping and we expect that art lovers will respond accordingly."

Leading the sale are several works by the master of screen printing, Andy Warhol. These include prints from his 1982 series of colourful dollar bills, with estimates from $60,000-$120,000; a portrait of Lenin, printed in the year of his death in 1987, estimated at $80,000+; and a lithograph of his iconic portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, printed in 1964 and valued at $30,000-$50,000.

Prints by contemporary artists are led by two works by American artist Chuck Close – a self portrait executed in 2000, estimated at $50,000-$70,000, and a remarkable 113-color hand printed ukiyo-e woodcut portrait of his niece Emma, printed in 2002 and estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Further contemporary prints include a folio of 10 works by the New York street artist KAWS, a print by the Japanese Neo-Pop artist Takashi Murakami, and a virtual menu of food prints by American painter Wayne Thiebaud.

Collectors seeking works by Picasso on a budget will have the chance to bid on several ceramic pieces, with hand painted plates, vases and pitchers priced at just $3,000 up to $30,000. The sale will also offer his 1962 linocut Le déjeuner sur l’herbe, valued at $20,000-$30,000.

Further notable names on the line-up will include Keith Haring, Frank Stella, M.C Escher, David Hockney, Salvador Dalí, Donald Judd and Jeff Koons.

Heritage Auctions’ inaugural Modern & Contemporary Prints and Multiples sale takes place in Dallas on May 24.
