A board-deck used by the world’s most famous skateboarder Tony Hawk in one of his most famous appearances will be auctioned in Los Angeles next month.

The 900 board deck is the central item in a sale at Julien’s Auctions curated by the skater and built around the 900 trick Hawk pioneered in 1999. Hawk went on to star in a series of videogames that took his fame beyond the skate ramp.

The board is a Birdhouse Falcon 2 that was used by Hawk at the 1999 X Games at San Francisco.

That’s when – at the 12th attempt – he landed after completing the 900-degrees of two-and-a-half spins in the air.

“This is the best day of my life,” Hawk said at the time.

Julien’s said in a statement: “The trick landed on the half-pipe like an earthquake in the world of sports. Much like Babe Ruth’s “Called Shot” bat, Serena Williams’ 23rd Grand Slam racket, or Michael Jordan’s “Flu Game” sneakers, Hawk’s 900 transcended a single athletic achievement. It was a redefining moment for skateboarding, propelling it into the global spotlight and cementing Hawk’s status not just as a legend in his field, but as one of the most transformative athletes in the history of modern sports.”

The skateboard deck is a Birdhouse brand Tony Hawk “Falcon 2” board with Fury trucks and unmarked wheels. It carries an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.

Alongside it are being sold pretty much everything Hawk was wearing at the time, including the helmet ($7,000 top estimate), knee pads ($6,000), sneakers ($5,000) and his access passes ($2,000).

Skateboards can be valuable if they are linked with the right skater. A Hawk board was auctioned in 2012 for £19,500 (like this sale part of the cash went to support Hawk’s Skatepark Project), and a Jamie Thomas board with the lyrics of Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind sold for £27,500 in the same year.

A skateboard decorated by Kurt Cobain realised $35,200 in 2022.

The Tony Hawk 900 sale is on September 23 in Los Angeles.
