Over 450 costumes, props, and sets from the award-winning Netflix series The Crown will be auctioned in February. The highly anticipated sale gives collectors a chance to own a piece of the critically acclaimed show.
The massive auction includes costumes worn by lead actors. Recognizable props and backdrops are also featured.
Among the top items are the replica “Revenge Dress” worn by Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, valued at £8,000-£12,000.
A reproduction of the Coronation Coach used in The Crown is up for sale.
Also up for sale is the world’s only recreation of the Gold State Coach from Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, with an estimate of £30,000-£50,000.
“This is the closest anyone can come to owning the real royal artifacts seen on-screen,” said a spokesperson for the auctioneers.
The sale could not be better timed. The UK’s royal family remain incredibly popular, and sometimes controversial.
Recent sales of clothing worn by Diana, Princess of Wales has broken records. In September a gown raised $600,000 at auction, a record that was broken just last month when another dress hit a value of $1.143 million.
Undoubtedly, the success of The Crown has fed into this focus on Diana. And, interest in Diana’s real life – full of drama and tragedy – will feed back into interest in the Crown.
Ongoing coverage of the life of her children, Princes William and Harry, ex-husband, King Charles, and the woman who was the “third person” in their marriage, Queen Camilla, mean Diana will remain highly collectible for the time being at least.
This sale should cash in on both ends of this equation.
It is also a chance for TV fans to celebrate a show that has won both Emmy and Golden Globes awards and is one of the biggest successes of the streaming era. The fact that the sale is preceded by a ticketed exhibition only confirms its potential.
