Lamborghinis lead Silverstone Auctions’ £3.2 million sale

Lamborghinis led the field at the Silverstone race track last week, as Silverstone Auctions achieved a result of £3.2 million in their annual May sale.
Topping the sale was a 1983 Lamborghini Countach 5000 S, one of the most iconic ‘pin up’ cars of the 1980s, which sold for £281,250 ($410,553).

Originally owned by his Majesty Prince Salmon Bin Samd Bin Abaul Aziz Alsaud from Saudia Arabia, the car was one of around just 30 right-hand drive examples ever produced, making it even rarer and more desirable for collectors.

Not far behind was a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary edition which sold for £241,875 ($353,075), followed by another prancing horse in the shape of a 1991 Lamborghini Diablo, which fetched £79,000 ($115,319).

Another of the sale’s standout lots was a 1962 Maserati Sebring Series I, regarded as "one of the rarest and most desirable of all Sixties’ Maserati". As one of only ten examples ever built, and with just 45,000 miles on the clock from new, the highly desirable example of Italian automotive styling sold for £196,875 ($287,387).

There were also impressive six-figure results for a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL which fetched £101,813 ($148,621); a 1986 Aston Martin V8 Volante which sold for $137,250 ($200,350); a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 which sold for £151,875 ($221,698); and a 1987 Ferraris Testarossa which sold for £120,375 ($175,716).

Further notable results included a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda which sold for £60,750 ($88,679); a 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring which realized £82,688 ($120,703); and a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STi which sold for £73,125 ($106,743).

"We’re delighted to return great prices to our vendors in our first sale of the year at Silverstone race circuit," said Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions. "Once again, I believe we put together a fantastic catalogue with a wide selection of high pedigree classics."

"It’s been a great start to the summer auction season and I look forward to welcoming customers old and new to our next sales very soon."
