A rare, signed copy of Ayn Rand’s ground-breaking and still controversial 1943 novel the Fountainhead is for sale at a major British memorabilia dealer.

Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead was published in 1943. It is one of the key works of the Russian-born philosophers Objectivist world-view and its 8-million sales speak to its enduring and deep influence.

Rand’s key, thrilling (and controversial and transgressive) thesis was that selfishness is good.

This copy of the novel, which follows an architect as he battles to succeed, was printed in 1964. Already, her poorly reviewed novel was on its 17th edition.

It’s for sale at Paul Fraser Collectibles.

Paul Fraser, chairman of Paul Fraser Collectibles, said: “Demand for signed copies of The Fountainhead began almost immediately in 1943.”

As this rather sleek portrait from 1943 suggests Ayn Rand had a considerable following in her lifetime and you could argue her political views have never been more successful in 2025.

And Rand’s popularity continued to grow. By 1970, when this copy of the Fountainhead was signed, with a dedication to Jack Cleary, she was publishing her own journal and delivering popular lectures.

Now, Rand is considered one of the most influential political voices of the 20th century.

Despite the lack of credentialled and academic support for her philosophical and literary works, she is a major figure in American conservative and libertarian circles.

Alan Greenspan, a chairman of the Federal Reserve, was a member of Rand’s close circle.

Tens of millions of copies of her books have been sold. A survey to find the most influential books for American Library of Congress Book of the Month Club members in 1991 placed her novel Atlas Shrugged as second only to the Bible.

All of this, says Mr Fraser, has driven continued interest in her work, and value for good quality original and significant copies.

“Today, the biggest names in business and politics – including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump – all state they have been influenced by Rand’s philosophies,” he said.

“And this all explains why it is impossible to find a genuine signed copy of The Fountainhead from any reputable book seller for less than £3,593 today.

“Except in one location. And that place is Paul Fraser Collectibles.”

The Fountainhead, 1964 copy, signed and dedicated by Ayn Rand, is listed at Paul Fraser Collectibles now.
