The original painting for the best-known poster of the first Star Wars film is for sale for the first time with a $1-million starting price next month.

The poster for Star Wars, now called Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, was owned by Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz whose family are offering it for sale for the first time at Heritage Auction’s Hollywood Entertainment Signature Auction on December 9 to 10.

In a statement, Heritage say: First appearing in national newspaper ads on May 13, 1977, nearly two weeks before the film’s release, the dynamic composition introduced audiences to “a galaxy far, far away.”

Chinese-American artist Tom Jung created the image. His style grew from an enthusiasm for caricature and cartooning and can be seen on posters for movies as various as Dr. Zhivago, School for Scoundrels, and Papillon, his breakthrough work.

Tom Jung had originally believed the final poster for his concept would be drawn by Conan artist Frank Frazetta whose influence is clear here. In the end, he completed the project himself, to great effect. Image courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

Gary Kurtz first worked with Star Wars director George Lucas on 1973’s American Graffiti. He produced the first two films in the original trilogy.

Kurtz died in 2018. His daughter, Melissa Kurtz said: “It serves as a warm reminder of that incredible experience — being part of the making of a film that has touched so many lives.”

Star Wars memorabilia is a collectible galaxy in its own right. Just this year, a Darth Vader light saber sold for $3.6 million, and next month a Boba Fett blaster is expected to sell for more than £700,000.

Star Wars posters are very valuable. In 2018 a concept design for the Empire Strikes Back was auctioned for $26,400. That is the most valuable Star Wars poster ever sold, and good condition, early posters commonly sell for prices in the $10,000 range.

Bidding is open now in Heritage’s sale.
