A single bottle of whisky distilled in an edition of two will be auctioned in New York laster this month when it is expected to realise up to $80,000.

The spirit was distilled by The Macallan with an American oak sherry seasoned butt and is inspired by the people and culture of Mexico.

The whisky went into the cask on February 10, 2005, and has been bottled at 54.9% ABV or cask strength.

Another bottle has been produced, but the sale, at Sotheby’s in New York on March 21 is the only chance to buy a bottle.

If you do win the auction, and choose to drink it, then you can expect to enjoy: “fruity notes of pineapple and citrus including grapefruit and orange peel alongside decadent richness of creme brulee and cinnamon spice.

“On the palate, mouthcoating viscosity through notes of creamy dulce de leche, cinnamon dusted churros and almonds tumbled in caramelised sugar. Balanced with rich vanilla pod and charred pineapple.

“The finish is long and sweet with tropical fruits, rich oak and dark chocolate.”

The bottle carries a $30,000 to $80,000 estimate and – as of March 12 – has attracted a bid of $26,000.

Whisky is a popular collector’s item and has been attracting attention as an investment vehicle.

Alongside this bottle in Sotheby’s Whisky & Whiskey sale is a 60-year-old Macallan The Red Collection bottle with an estimate of $110,000 to $170,000.

A bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle ‘Van Winkle Selection’ Kentucky bourbon festival master distiller’s auction 2007 carries a top estimate of $50,000 and has already attracted a $32,000 bid.

The rarest and most expensive bottles can be auctioned for millions of dollars.

The world’s most expensive whisky was an Isabella’s Islay, auctioned for $6.2 million, but that came in a gold and precious-stone encrusted decanter that accounted for $6 million of its value.

A Macallan M was auctioned for $628,205 in Hong Kong in 2014 in a specially made crystal decanter.

A Glendiffich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve from 1955 auctioned in 2012 for $94,000 in a standard-issue bottle.

The Macallan to sell later this month is specially packaged, in a box designed to celebrate the Day of the Dead and includes work by illustrator Alfredo Rios.
