A car in which Michael Schumacher won both the Monaco Grand Prix and the F1 World Championship will be auctioned at the race this year.

The Ferrari F2001 Chassis 211 is described by auctioneer RM Sotheby as “the Crown Jewel”.

Its sale will also be a first.

RM Sotheby’s says: “The special racer holds the unique distinction of being the only Schumacher Ferrari to ever win both the Monaco Grand Prix and Formula 1 World Championship in the same season, and is set to make history for a second time on 24 May 2025 when it becomes the first Formula 1 car to be sold during the iconic race.”

The car is a 2001 chassis, an F2001 built by a team including Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne and Schumacher himself.

There’s no doubting the car’s authenticity and it has been prepared by Ferrari so it could race again if the buyer desires. Image courtesy RM Sotheby’s.

Augustin Sabatié-Garat, director of sales at RM Sotheby’s, said: “Victory on the streets of Monte-Carlo alone would make this a hugely significant Ferrari, but to do so in the same season that it crossed the line to capture both the Drivers’ and [Teams]’ World Championships – the first back-to-back championship double in Ferrari history – takes it to a completely different level.

“We are very excited to take chassis 211 back to the site of its historic win, and to be able to auction it during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend is an immense privilege.”

F1 is an extremely collectible sport. It combines cutting edge tech with traditional personal bravery that makes heroes of drivers and designers alike.

Early this year a Mercedes W196 R Stromlinienwagen from 1955 auctioned for £42.9 million. It had a storied racing history and was driven by both Juan Manuel Fangio and Sterling Moss.

The most expensive Ferrari sold at auction is a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO/330LM that realised just over £42 million in 2023.

Another modern F1 car, Lewis Hamilton’s first Mercedes W04, realised £15.1 million in 2023.

Michael Schumacher is one of most successful drivers in F1 history, with seven drivers’ titles. He retired from the sport in 2012. The following year he was seriously injured in a skiing accident and has been receiving private medical care, while possibly in a coma, ever since.

The car up for sale in Monaco was sold in 2017 for $7.5 million, but will surely go for much more in 2025. No estimate has been published before the sale.
